Corporate governance structures and bank risk taking behaviour: evidence from Africa using income bracket approach

Baah Aye Kusi, Gloria Clarissa Dzeha, Daniel Ofori-Sasu, Lawrence Ansah-Addo

International Journal of Business Governance and Ethics, 2018, Vol. 13, No. 2, pp. 138–169. Published online 16 Jan 2019.

Two-step GMM panel of 215 banks from 29 African countries. Board size and CEO duality significantly reduce bank risk-taking, but excessive board size increases it; effects vary across income brackets — governance effects are context-dependent.

Keywords: bank; risk-taking; income bracket; context; Africa.

Thesis

MPhil thesis • University of Ghana, July 2015

Does Non-Interest Income Make Banks More Risky? Retail Vs Investment Banking Activities in Africa.

L. Ansah-Addo — MPhil Finance (Finance & Econometrics), Department of Finance. Archived in UGSpace, the University of Ghana repository.

Bankscope panel of African banks, 2008–2012, estimated by OLS with Newey-West standard errors. As large banks grow, fee/commission and trading income raise risk exposure; trading income destabilises both retail and investment banks due to speculative volatility. Smaller banks can stabilise through non-interest income; banks are advised to design retail products that generate stable fee income.
